Cold Front on the Lake

Winter Birding Lake Chapala

After a Blue Norther swept through Lakeside last night, some 30 of us ventured out to Cristiania Park in Chapala to see what birds had not migrated even further south.

Whitecaps on the Lake and swift 60 degree breeze drove most of the Americanos home early (particularly the Californians) leaving a covey of shirt-sleeved Canadians to bask in the sunshine.

Once we got to the north end of the Park where the birds had taken cover under the sheltering brush, we identified 40 species including:

American White Pelican
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egret
Cattle Egret
Black-Crowned Night Heron
American Bittern

White-Faced Ibis
Mexica Duck
Blue-Winged Teal
Turkey Vulture
Black Vulture
Common Moorhen
American Coot
Killdeer
Solitary Sandpiper
Spotted Sandpiper
Western Sandpiper
Common Snipe
Ring-Billed Gull
Caspian Tern
Rock Dove
Inca Dove
Groove-Billed Ani
Violet-Crowned Hummingbird
Belted Kingfisher
Golden-Fronted Woodpecker
Vermillion Flycatcher
Tropical Kingbird
Great Kiskadee
Northern Rough-Winged Swallow
Barn Swallow
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher
Loggerhead Shrike
Yellow-Rumped Warbler
Great-Tailed Grackle
House Finch
Canyon Towhee
House Sparrow
