The Night before Bird Count

The Night before Bird Count
Winter Trees

The Night before Bird Count

'Twas the night before Bird Count and all
through lakeside

Not a birder was stirring, not even team guides
Their binocs were hung by their field books with care
In hopes that rare birds would appear everywhere.

The counters were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of frigate birds danced in their heads;
And Jude in her kerchief and Al in his cap
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap.

When out on the lake there arose such a clatter
Al sprang to his feet to see what was the matter;
When what in his 20x scope should he sight
But a miniature sleigh and six life birds in flight.

With a cute little driver, so relaxed and un-tense
He knew in a moment it must be St. Vince;
More rapid than eagles his wobblers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name.

"Now, Wilson! Now, Townsend! Now, Black-throated Gray!
On, Yellow! On Nashville! On Colima-this way!
To the top of the church! To the top of the wall!
Now fly away! Fly away! Fly away all!"

He was dressed all in feathers, from his head to his foot,
And his pockets were full of jacanas and coots;
A large flock of raptors was stuffed in his pack,
And finches and sparrows-there were no birds he lacked.

He spoke not a word, but went right to the grind
of stocking the bird routes for counters to find.
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a nod
And away they all flew to a Bird Count in Guad.

But Al heard him exclaim, as he flew through the night,
"High counts don't just happen, it takes some foresight!"

Happy Birding.

Roseate Spoonbills?

We chatted once about the roseate
spoonbills that are supposedly wintering somewhere on
the east end of the lake. Do you have any idea where
they are located and what the best approach would be
to see them at their best?
I am very active with Amigos del Lago and will ask
the web master to put out a request to that mailing
list, which includes people from all around the lake.
Maybe you or someone will know something useful to put
me on the trail. Seeing them is one of my goal for
this season here in Mexico.

Yucatan Birding Report

Hola audubonistas, Judy here. A week-long trip driving my family from one side of the Yucatan Peninsula to the other to visit Mayan ruins allowed time for a bit of birding too. The one real birding stop was the fishing village of Celestun on the gulf coast where american flamingos enjoy the rich plankton of Ria Lagartos. We hired a boat at the bridge and enjoyed a two-hour excursion that included a ride through and a stop in the mangroves where bare-throated tiger herons and mangrove warblers can be found. We stayed at a lovely new guest house, Casa de Celeste Vida, right on the beach on the outskirts of town. The rooms were spotless and the kitchens were well-equipped. Hosts Ken and Karen Strauss of Saskatchewan couldn't have been nicer. I only wished that we could have stayed longer. If you head that way, check out their website: http://www.celestevida.ca/

Below are the 43 Yucatan species that I could identify. My favorite was the immature Yucatan jay at Tulum.

Hola Audubonista(s) Allen,
Report from the Malecon at Jocotepec, Jalisco, Mexico (Nov 11, 2007):
We had a great turnout of birds and watchers but once again the Birds won 52 to 34.
Special recognition goes to today's Lead Birders Don Bell and Tom Holeman.
The Lake is up; the pelicans are back but out far at this end of the Lake. The most numerous species was the white-faced ibis with well over a hundred foraging in the lirios at the ends of the malecon.
A "life-bird" for many of us was the plumbeous vireo.
Be sure to watch for announcements about the Christmas Bird Counts at Lake Chapala and Guadalajara.
Sincerely,
Allen y Judy (Turner y Boyd)
