| | | Next Bird Walk Friday, July 31, at 8.30 a.m. | | | Join leader Stan Dunn on the next birdwalk at the Jocotepec malecón park. With the lake level still down, the park at the malecón is eminently walkable. We will go past the large gardens that border the park and then cross the football field to view the bay which forms the north-west corner of the lake. Expect to see lesser goldfinches, white collared seed-eaters, golden-fronted woodpeckers and the usual range of water birds. We'll also be looking out for birds around water puddles at the irrigation valves in the park.
We will meet at the malecón parking lot at 8.30 a.m. After the walk we will go for breakfast at Doña Lola's on the west side of Ajijic to complete the bird list. How to get there: The Jocotopec malecón is twenty minutes west of Ajijic. As you approach the east end of Joco, you must turn left just before you get to the Pemex station. Proceed to the lake and park your car. | | | | | | | Wood Storks Sighted at the Dyke | | |  John and Rosemary Keeling went around the lake on July 15. Their target was the 10-mile dyke across the east end of the lake. From the dyke they saw five wood storks, which are uncommon for these parts. They also saw seven American white pelicans, five roseate spoonbills, two fulvous whistling ducks and one black-bellied whistling duck. All told they saw 54 species that day.
(Photo by Vince Gravel) | | | | | | | July 13 Bird Walk Report | | | Twelve people enjoyed good weather on the shore behind the pumping station at Santa Cruz de la Soledad with Rosemary Keeling as leader. An egret rookery was observed nearby, and a green heron remained close to the group for upfront observation. Eastern meadowlarks were seen in the fields, and also a crested caracara.
