Sunday, Aug 20, 2006 Birding Report

Fourteen Audubonistas from the Lake Chapala area met at 7:30 a.m. at Cristiana Park in Chapala by the Lake. Guided by Tom Holeman and Jeanne Greene, the verdant grounds on this cloudy summer morning gave us opportunity to identify some 22+ species of birds including:

Least Grebe
Neotropic Cormorant (two flybys over the lake)
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Snowy Egret
Black-Crowned Night-Heron (numerous)
Common Moorhen (followed by one Odd Duck)
Rock Pigeon (more numerous on the Plaza)
Inca Dove
Groove-billed Ani (in clusters)
Broad-tailed Hummingbird (we think)
Golden-fronted Woodpecker
Vermillion Flycatcher (m & f)
Tropical Kingbird
Barn Swallow (numerous)
Canyon Wren (by cascading song)
Rufous-backed Robin
Loggerhead Shrike
Yellow Warbler
White-collared Seedeater
Canyon Towhee (aka Brown Towhee)
Great-tailed Grackle

We repaired to the Paris Cafe in Chapala to discuss our observations and to argue fine points of identification over waffles, eggs, coffee, and more.
